A few weeks ago we got the chance to do a dry-run of filming a show and doing a few interviews. I'd actually call it a wet-dry run. Wet meaning the camera was rolling, and dry meaning that if it came out scrappy, no big deal. Anyway, I think we were pretty successful on this wet-dry run. We saw Sawako perform a solo show at SP1, a branch of the MoMA. With press passes on, we got to go backstage and watch the performers prepare. They were creating costumes and head-dresses that they wore during Sawako's performance. Through-out the show they became "the bubble ladies" blowing bubbles of all sizes. Classic bubble blowing, bubble guns, giant bubbles, you name it. The venue was outdoors and enclosed on three sides so the wind was creating a sort of spiral around the place...bubble tornado!
After the show, we interviewed Nobuko (a collaborator with Sawako) across the street in front of a graffiti-covered building. Then we talked to Sawako on the roof of SP1, with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop. Here's a few production stills from the day. Notice the hipster holding the mic.
